Ixias are bulbs from the iris family. Ixia is a variable genus with many flower colours that hybridise easily. Ixias are exclusively winter-growing, summer-dormant plants. It is now confined to a few isolated and declining populations. Lachenalia and Ixia are also known as 'groenkalossie' because of a green tinge to the flowers. Ixia are pollinated by monkey beetles, flies, butterflies and bees. See: http://pza.sanbi.org/ixia-viridiflora.
